Technical leaders provide leadership during the undertaking of information technology projects, such as software development initiatives, enhancements and maintenance efforts. They are also commonly referred to as system or information architects. Technical leaders contribute to key technology design decisions, guide technical teams through the various phases of the software development process and report progress to management and project stakeholders. Essentially, they ensure delivered software programs meet the standards for security, correctness, platform readiness and performance.

Nature of Work

Technical leaders bring coordination, oversight and technology leadership to the software development process. They identify and translate development requirements into technology architecture and infrastructure design specifications. Technical leaders work closely with information technology project managers to expand design specifications into workable solutions. They also promote software development standards, conduct system analyses and guide senior management and project teams during the technology decision-making process. Technical leaders effectively explain technical capabilities and features in business terms and generate the management support required to deliver an organization's technology strategy.

Acceptable Educaiton and Job Experience

Educational requirements for technical leaders can vary by employer, industry and technology undertaking. In general, an undergraduate degree in computer science, software engineering or related discipline and strong knowledge of software development life-cycle (SDLC) techniques qualify many technologists for entry-level software development jobs. Large corporations, however, show a preference for individuals with advanced degrees and at least 10 years of experience managing large-scale technology implementations, including infrastructure sizing, load balancing and fail-over/disaster recovery planning for applications hosted in shared environments. Advanced knowledge of the best practices for system development is required for success in all technical leader jobs.

Skills for Success

The effectiveness and success of technical leaders largely depends on their ability to shape a strategic vision, drive execution and lead change. The ability to continuously develop creative technology solutions to meet the evolving needs of a global economy are increasingly beneficial. Technical leaders work efficiently and effectively across diverse cultures and time zones, set realistic expectations with stakeholders and motivate development teams to produce high-quality computing products. From a technical perspective, they possess a solid understanding of complex programs used during the software development process, such as web services, service-oriented architectures, extensible markup language (XML), Java and J2EE, to name a few.

Career Advancement

As technical leaders gain more professional experience, they may enjoy promotions to senior management and supervisory roles within an information technology organization. Technical leaders who demonstrate exceptional leadership ability and business savvy may continue to executive positions, such as chief technology officer or chief information officer. Those with sales experience and expertise in a particular technology area may enjoy lucrative careers as business development executives or account executives at technology engineering firms.

Compensation

According to national salary statistics published by PayScale, system architects working in the United States gross annual salaries ranging from $86,677 to $127,835 as of June 2010. Some technical leaders enjoy additional earnings, ranging from $4,939 to $15,302, from bonus payouts. Technical architects employed by companies with profit-sharing programs may derive additional earnings ranging from $2,923 to $10,174. Proceeds from commission-based earnings range from $250 to $58,958. The total compensation for technical leaders in the United States, inclusive of salary, bonus, profit-sharing and commission-based earnings, ranges from $92,268 to $138,412.
